YouTube du Jour: The Best of the Beat

Friday night, OffBeat presents the Best of the Beat at Generations Hall. We recognize the best in Louisiana music, people who’ve shaped the music and our culture, and feature music by some of the city’s top artists. This year, our Lifetime Achievement Award in Music goes to the great Dave Bartholomew – a member of [...]

Best of the Beat Lifetime Achievement in Music Award: Dave Bartholomew

Saturday, November 13, 2010 may have been the greatest night of Dave Bartholomew’s life. And that’s saying something. He has lived over 90 years (Ancestry.com records suggest that he may have, in fact, reached 91 on December 20), and he has played the grand musical spectrum of American popular music—from early jazz (which his father [...]

Dr. John Enters Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Alice, Diamond, Waits and Love

[Updated] Yesterday’s rumors proved true. Late yesterday afternoon, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that the induction Class of 2011 included Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Darlene Love, and New Orleans’ Dr. John. This year’s recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award are Elektra Records’ Jac Holzman and Specialty Records’ Art Rupe. The [...]

YouTube du Jour: Dr. John

Congratulations to Dr. John, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011 with Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits and Darlene Love. Here’s footage of a very funky (on my levels) version of “Right Place, Wrong Time.”

Dr. John Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Confirmed

We reported earlier on the leaked rumor that Dr. John will been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, but it has apparently now been confirmed. Dr. John will join Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits and Darlene Love in this year’s class of the Rock Hall’s inductees.

Dr. John to the Hall of Fame?

Late last week, HitsDailyDouble.com reported that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will announce tomorrow that Dr. John is among its newest inductees. Neil Diamond and Alice Cooper are supposedly heading the Class of 2011, and they’ll be joined by Dr. John, Tom Waits (Our dream of seeing those two give speeches on the [...]

Preserve the Moment

I thoroughly enjoyed going to Cleveland to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week. But I’ve always been a museum buff. It’s interesting to see what’s come before and see it happen again and again. You just have to be cognizant of the patterns that emerge as time goes by. Music is [...]

Where Did I Come From?

In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there was a computer terminal that helped trace the influences that led to a given band. Nirvana, it said, was the product of the Pixies and the Melvins. I can’t imagine that anyone at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thinks influence is that simple – [...]

Signs of Life

This morning, publisher Jan Ramsey wrote about her experience at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. My own response was a little different. It occasionally spoke to me, but too often the history of rock ‘n’ roll seemed to presented as the story of the clothes musicians wore and the guitars they played. Striking [...]

The Rock Hall Celebrates New Orleans, Domino and Bartholomew

New Orleans is such a rich subject for investigation that it can easily lead you astray. To some extent, the city and its music worked it misleading magic on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s tribute to Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew Saturday night in Cleveland. Rather than focusing solely on Domino’s recordings and [...]
