Warpaint Attacks Republic Tonight

Tonight Los Angeles indie rockers Warpaint come to Republic on their current Spring tour around the States (they were in Australia and New Zealand at the beginning of the year, and head across the pond to England in May). The band has received a lot of buzz since the release of their latest album The Fool, with many praising the band’s heavy doses of psychedelia, experimentation, “art”, and estrogen in their rock. I see where these buzz words come from—their closest well-known parallel in my mind is MGMT’s last album—but I find them less experimental or “arty” than simply dream-like. Their videos, such as their latest above, for the song “Undertow”, reinforce that notion with their blurry haze; last year’s “Elephants” played with a similar phantasmal riff.

Of course, much has been made as well of the fact that the band is now made up of all women, and it didn’t hurt that two of the former members went on to become a Hollywood starlet and a rock star guitarist. Don’t let the hype get in the way though—the band plays well-written, catchy, trance-like tracks, like “Stars” below.
