Black woman-owned production company produces Future Cowboys ‘PARTY’ video

17TH Productions has released “PARTY,” a space cowboy-themed roller-skating music video for Future Cowboys featuring the Soul Brass Band. This is the inaugural project for the Black woman-owned company, which specializes in roller skating culture as creative expression. The mastermind behind 17TH Productions is New Orleans artist J.Mix, who was invited to direct the video by Future Cowboy’s member Jamie Bernstein, who was inspired by J. Mix’s roller skating content on social media. The eye-catching cinematography is credited to David “Skinny” Levi.

The video was filmed at Fish Pot Studios in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans as a collaboration between the Future Cowboys band and twelve skaters from New Orleans of varying skill levels all wearing inventive costumes. The skate movements offer a balance between improv and choreography. Skinny and J.Mix added a psychedelic vibe with an immersive color scheme, slow motion, special effects and smoke tricks.

“I hope the artists that watch this video are inspired to push beyond their limitations of creative expression,” said J. Mix. “Roller skating provides me an outlet to express my artistry in ways that I can only communicate with wheels underneath my feet. Taking my imagination and converting it to tangible results was a humbling accomplishment. I am forever grateful that Jamie saw my abilities to direct before I saw it in myself.”

“PARTY” is a track off the Life On Mars album that the Future Cowboys premiered in November 2020. The song features the Soul Brass Band and was written by Jamie Bernstein, Eren Cannata and Miguel Oliveria.
