Leyla McCalla to Play Midnight Show at Preservation Hall

Multi-instrumentalist and multi-lingual singer Leyla McCalla will head to Preservation Hall for a midnight show on the night of Saturday, September 24.

A former member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, McCalla spent a number of years living in New Orleans starting in 2010. Her latest album, A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey, is inspired by her experiences in the Crescent City, and draws on Haitian, Cajun, creole, jazz and folk influences. The record features a guest appearance by Louis Michot of Lost Bayou Ramblers, as well as contributions from Rhiannon Giddens, Marc Ribot and her husband Daniel Tremblay.

We caught up with McCalla over the summer for our July edition of BackTalk. The multi-talented musician told us about rediscovering her Haitian heritage in New Orleans, saying:

“New Orleans pushed me further into my Haitian heritage… I was in New Orleans going, ‘Ah, red beans and rice.’ In Haiti we call it sos pwa. And the subtropical environment feels like Haiti. The way people are so laid back reminds me of Haiti. I read a book called The World That Made New Orleans: From Spanish Silver to Congo Square [by Ned Sublette]. It blew my mind how intertwined the history of Haiti and Louisiana is.”

McCalla will take the stage at 12am, so fans might be able to make it Preservation Hall after Beyonce’s show at the Superdome. Tickets are currently on sale for $20.
