Kermit Ruffins’ weekly longtime weekly gigs in New Orleans are legendary: Vaughan’s in the Bywater on Thursdays, Bullet’s Sports Bar in the Seventh Ward on Tuesdays. Recently he added two new gigs to the weekly lineup: Sundays and Mondays at his new club Kermit’s Treme Speakeasy, which opened around Jazz Fest time at the corner of Basin Street and North Robertson. Both sets start around 6 p.m.

In addition to serving drinks and jams, Ruffins is also overseeing the kitchen in his new bar. Like his music, Ruffins cooks a mix of both standards—red and butter beans, fried chicken, Tuesday seafood boils—and some funkier dishes like duck stuffing, fried rabbit, and raccoon with grits.

In this video, WGNO News’ Anne Cutler visits Kermit Ruffins at the Speakeasy to watch him cook “t-bone steaks as big as your head” with a dash of what Kermit calls “Tony Saturated”.

Kermit Ruffins’ sets on Sundays and Mondays start at 6 p.m., with no cover. On Thursdays, Kermit’s Treme Speakeasy is hosting an open jam session, with free food for the musicians who play.
