Deadboy and the Elephantmen, We Are Night Sky (Fat Possum)

For a former heavy metal dude, Dax Riggs sings his richly evocative lyrics in a husky, soulful, exceedingly listenable voice. He’s a true singer of rock – think Nick Cave meets Leonard Cohen, with falsetto curls at the ends of his lines. But though Riggs also twists his melody lines into original forms –and though minimalist drummer Tessie Brunette brightens Riggs’ corners perfectly with her own girlish monotone – the first Fat Possum release from Deadboy and the Elephantmen, We Are Night Sky, quickly loses all sense of surprise. Most of its songs utilize one tempo and two chords from a down-stroked guitar. They employ an electric one for a rockin’, Queens of the Stone Age feel, and an acoustic one for fans of Nirvana Unplugged. Intermittent grainy vocals and tinny, lo-fi guitar timbres (sometimes picked rather than strummed) broaden the duo’s pallet slightly, but overall We Are Night Sky, feels like one long song.
