Jovino Santos Neto, Roda Carioca (Adventure)

When Jazzfest celebrated the 500th anniversary of Brazil by inviting some of that country’s best musicians, pianist Jovino Santos Neto was one of the event’s minor stars, performing with the iconoclastic Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal and on his own. Roda Carioca (“Rio Circle”) displays Neto’s virtuosity on material ranging from the dexterous groove “Estrela Do Mar” (“Starfish”), several supple sambas and the Chick Corea-like ostinatos of “Marfim” (“Ivory”) and “Fest De Ere” (“Children’s Party”). The great Brazilian singer Joyce guests on “Nana” and Hermeto joins in on his own “Juvenal No Grumari,” playing a euphonium mouthpiece, melodia, a chewing gum wrapper (sugarless) and a glass of water.
