Junior Wells, Live At Theresa’s 1975

In the 1970s, Chicago’s Junior Wells—and his partner Buddy Guy—were international blues icons, touring North America, Japan, Europe and even Africa. Still, Wells stayed close to his Windy City roots, maintaining a steady weekend gig (when he was back home) at Theresa’s, a tiny basement tavern deep on the Southside. His Chicago band changed players on occasion, but with veterans such as Levi Warren, Sam Lawhorn, Phil Guy, Ernest Johnson, and Byther Smith, he always maintained solid backing. Wells originals here include “Little By Little,” “Snatch It Back and Hold It,” “Messin’ With the Kid,” and the spectacular “Come On In This House.” So too are Southside standards like “Juke,” “Love Here With a Feeling” and “Key To the Highway.” As expected on a live gig, things get a little chaotic for a moment or two, but there’s a lot of kick throughout. Junior’s harp playing is rather sparse, but when he blew he meant it. His between song banter is also quite entertaining and it’s interesting to note that Theresa’s audience barely applauded when songs concluded. Live at Theresa’s 1975 is not just an entertaining Junior Wells set; it’s an unexpected document of historic Southside Chicago blues.
