Rhonda Vincent’s Christmas album works because she commits to the songs, and to what the songs are supposed to be. She doesn’t make them show pieces for her voice and mandolin skills, instead singing the songs beautifully and sincerely, with just enough personality to make the versions distinct but not so much that the sentiments are lost. The light bluegrass treatments are also perfect for Christmas songs, giving them a little swing and a sympathetic, hopeful sonic context.
