WIN TICKETS: Uptown Saturday Night with The Honorable South,
Mykia Jovan and Jeff Pagano
plus DJ RQaway

After somewhat of a brief hiatus, it appears New Orleans’ afro-rock buzz band is back. The Honorable South has played a handful of shows over the past month alone it seems – a quickened pace from last season’s few, if hefty, appearances at local festivals like Bayou Boogaloo. And this Saturday, August 17 they join the ranks of a curated crew of the city’s progressive soul-based artists presently thinking out of the box at Tipitina’s for the third installment of the new series, Uptown Saturday Night.

The Honorable South headlines the August edition of Uptown Saturday Night.

Since 2009, The Honorable South has steadily refined and developed a progressively sharpened and unique indie and afro-rock sound that they self-describe as “reminiscent of the eclectic Americana blend of Modest Mouse, the raw rock anthem energy of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the feel good verse of Outkast, and the soulful roots commentary of Nina Simone.”

Most recently, their stand-out music video from last year’s single, “The Beast,” directed by Adam Gambrel, was nominated for the Best Southern Music Video at the Southern Alabama Film Festival (SoAl) 2013 and voting is now open here, should you feel so inclined to contribute to their win. But their live experience must surely not be lacking, if their nearly sold-out set at the grand opening of new music venue, Gasa Gasa last month is any indication. The band says they’ve been in the studio working on new music lately (as well as acquired a new bassist), hence the sort of live show sabbatical, so we can likely expect to hear some new music this weekend.

The Honorable South’s sharing a bill with rising contemporary soul-jazz singer, Mykia Jovan should provide an interesting soundscape; especially considering Jovan says she is bringing her keyboardist, Jeff Pagano for the hit and the young duo will be performing not a typical bluesy vibe, but rather presenting their experimental project, Funeral Walkaway Parade.

This edition of Uptown Saturday Night – a monthly that aims to highlight and challenge soul-based artists to bring something new to the table – will also see DJ RQaway behind the decks, creating transitions from set to set.
