Make Music NOLA Announces “Adopt An Instrument” Drive

As animal activist organizations give people the opportunity to “adopt” polar bears in the arctic or elephants in Africa, New Orleanians can sponsor a more familiar beast: a musical instrument.

Make Music NOLA will host an Adopt-An-Instrument Drive from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 18 at Urban South Brewery with music by the Hot Club of New Orleans. Attendees will have the opportunity to “adopt” various musical instruments in exchange for a monthly donation ranging from $10 a month for a violin to $100 a month for a bass.

These donations will support these sponsored instruments living on in the hands of New Orleans youth who take one of Make Music NOLA’s various free music trainings for students eligible to receive free or reduced cost lunch. The nonprofit is a self-described “intensive music-for-social-change program” that operates in three New Orleans community centers and six local charter schools providing both in-school and after-school musical education.

Even if attendees don’t adopt an instrument, they can still support the cause by purchasing a pint. $1 from every pint sold at the event will go to support Make Music NOLA. If attendees do choose to adopt and make a monthly donation, they will have the chance to win a round trip Southwest Airlines. There will also be a silent auction.
