Berard, a mainstay on the Cajun music scene who is also a producer, lived in Cecilia, Louisiana. According to Robin May, a photographer with the Lafayette Independent, doctors at Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette initially thought Berard was suffering from pneumonia, but later determined it was meningitis.

Al Berard’s daughter, Maegan Berard, will appear at the Festival Internationale with Sweet Cecilia.

Berard has earned several Cajun French Music Association Awards, including Fiddler of the Year in 2007, Best Recording with a Fiddle in 1992, and Song of the Year 2006 for “Ma Petite Femme” as a songwriter. He also won a People’s Choice Award in 2007 for Old Style Cajun Music along with Jason Frey.

I have lost a friend. The music world has lost a legend. Most of all, a beautiful family has lost a loving father and husband. RIP Al.

A sad day for Cajun Music.

A sad day for the little community of Cecilia, he was a mainstay in our community with us growing up going to the little night clubs in town to hear his bands play always to a packed house, to him and his family singing in the church and at weddings and funerals… his music will live on in the heritage he bestowed upon his children….

I am so glad that I had a chance to sit in his fiddle class at Blackpot Camp in 2012. He was generous and funny, sweet and encouraging.
