Irvin Mayfield Resigns From UNO Professorship

The New Orleans Advocate and WWL-TV reported that New Orleans trumpeter Irvin Mayfield resigned from his professorship at the University of New Orleans on Monday. Mayfield left his $63,000 a year post after WWL-TV reported that Mayfield used New Orleans Public Library system funds for his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Public records show in 2012 the library’s foundation gave the New Orleans Public Library system $116,775. The same year, the foundation gifted Mayfield’s New Orleans Jazz Orchestra $666,000 for the New Orleans Jazz Market.

It was also revealed that Mayfield’s Chief of Staff at the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Stephanie Mayne, was also receiving a $45,000 salary to serve as Mayfield’s university assistant at the New Orleans Jazz Institute, housed at the University of New Orleans. Mayfield and his business partner, Ronald Markham, who serves as President and CEO of NOJO have yet to make a public statement regarding the Library Foundation/NOJO funds scandal.
