Show Review: The Meter Men and Page McConnell at the Joy

The Meter Men with Page McConnell closed out a two night run at The Joy Theater on Saturday, April 25.

Many classic Meters hits were played, including “Cissy Strut,” “Hand Clapping Song,” “Look-Ka Py Py” and “Hey Pocky A-Way.”

George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste and Leo Nocentelli represented the founding members of the Meters, who originally performed with Art Neville on the keys.

Taking over for Art was Page McConnell of Phish, who provided a number of great segments, including an impressive solo during “Hey Pocky A-Way.”

Special guest Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule also performed with the group, adding his signature blues style slide guitar.

With Meters incarnations filled with countless New Orleans musicians, it was refreshing to catch a set focused almost solely on Meters numbers performed by musicians who honed their craft outside of the Crescent City.

Haynes’ wailing guitar added grit to the usually smooth and soulful funk grooves, while Page, who clearly is versed in the rich piano culture of New Orleans music, was able to add his own idiosyncratic style while also paying tribute to Art’s classic sound.

Jazz Fest is known to mesh local talent with nationally prominent artists, and The Meter Men were a perfectly executed installment of this tried and true formula.
