Siberia Back In Action For Good

UPDATED: November 16, 2012, 1:16 p.m.

It’s almost official… Yesterday, the City Council supported the City Planning Commission’s recommendation to award Siberia a conditional-use permit. With the decision, the club received clearance to operate as a live music venue. Within weeks, the City Council is expected to vote on an ordinance, which, barring any unforeseen setbacks, will cement the permit’s legal status.

Siberia is back in business for live music thanks to a ruling Tuesday by the City Planning Commission to allow the St. Claude Avenue club to book live entertainment.

The popular club has been booking metal, singer-songwriters, rock and R&B acts since 2010 but was forced to cancel its programming this past summer when the city claimed the club did not have the correct permits. A recent ruling allowed Siberia to present a limited menu of events under “special permits” while the club’s permit request was being reviewed.

Siberia got strong community support at the public hearing, both from local musicians and local residents who said the club was a good neighbor that actually made the area along St. Claude a safer place at night.

“Aside from the support Siberia has given to so many local musicians, it’s the most vital music bar in the neighborhood,” said Lefty Parker of Lonely Lonely Knights, a local band that’s played numerous times at the club. “Since we’re becoming known as an arts district, Siberia’s presence is needed.”

The Planning Commission voted 6-0 to approve a conditional-use permit for live music at the club. Management agreed that all Siberia shows will end by 2 a.m. and that the doors will be closed during performances.
