‘Trans Scripts’ places narratives of trans women at the forefront of theater

From Nov. 17 to Nov. 24, Allways Lounge and Cabaret will present Trans Scripts: Part 1: The Women, a stage play focusing on the narratives told by trans women, featuring characters who range in age, ethnicity, socio-economic status, educational level and transition age. Paul Lucas, the Trans Scripts playwright, crafted the play’s seven focal storylines after conducting over 75 interviews with transgender people from around the world.

Lucas had the idea for Trans Scripts while discussing the experiences of transgender performers with his friend, who was an HIV-positive, disabled gay man. Lucas was taken aback when his friend disregarded the trans community as inauthentic. It was after this conversation that Lucas, himself a gay man, decided to create Trans Scripts as a way to highlight the trans identity, an often overlooked part of the LGBTQ community.

The play is brought to life by its strong cast, including  Nadine Berenger, Jazmine White-Davis, Jerek Edora, Joann Guidos, Teryl Lynn Foxx, Milan Nicole Sherry, and Sophie Marie White. Trans Scripts is brought to New Orleans by Tommye Myrick and the Voices in the Dark Repertory, a theater company which–since its conception as an all African American Women’s Theater Company in 1992–has focused on presenting artistic interpretations of the disenfranchised.

Allways Lounge and Cabaret is located at 2240 St. Claude Ave. The show will be performed on Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m., Nov. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m., Nov. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Nov. 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information about the show, including ticket prices, visit the Allways Lounge website, here.
