The Black Keys

June 1, 2005 by: David Kunian Leave a comment

Straight out of Akron, Ohio, the Black Keys brought their road tested stage show to TwiRoPa as a sort of wind-down for Jazz Fest. Guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney make a great rocking squall of music that sounds like much more than the two of them. They hit it hard from the beginning and didn’t let up on songs like “No Trust” and “Have Love Will Travel.” Carney plays the drums with a precise, yet flailing fury whether hitting them with sticks or maracas. Auerbach’s voice is a mix of raspy weariness and energetic growl that matches his expressive guitar playing. Sometimes he sounds like he’s playing through a amplifier and other times through a vacuum cleaner. Their choice covers of Junior Kimbrough’s “Everywhere I Go” and the Beatles’ “She Said She Said” maintained their individual uniqueness while blending in well with the band’s originals. The Black Keys’ no-frills attack and blues-like sensibility makes for a great live act and a great way to end a great Jazz Fest.
