Obituary: George “Tex” Stephens

George “Tex” Stephens, one of the first black radio announcers in New Orleans, a pioneer in the Civil Rights movement, and a dear friend to New Orleans music, died February 23, 2002, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 80. A native of Gretna, Louisiana, Stephens was given the “Tex” moniker after returning from a trip to visit relatives in Texas sporting a cowboy hat.
