James Singleton is a bass player who groomed himself from the beginning to be an accomplished accompanist, the supposed purpose of the bass—the backbeat of the band. One might guess that as one who accompanies others, he could be a card-carrying member of the madding crowd but guess again—he is a remarkably independent thinker.
