"I'm from western Maryland, where there’s a lot of bluegrass music. My mom is a classically trained opera singer. She met my stepdad playing jazz music together. They always did concerts together when I was growing up. They both played and sang in the church and both are excellent musicians and could have had careers as musicians but they chose children and other things over that.
