Because of his frequent Thursday' appearances at the Maple Leaf Bar, John Delafose was the first zydeco player heard live by many New Orleans fans, including this writer. For his Thursday crowds, his spontaneous, percussive accordion style, tirelessly long sets and expressive vocals characterized the best of zydeco, and his band- which included his sons Geno and Tony, as well as assorted nephews and grandsons- symbolized real family values.
