He grew up in the shadow of Congo Square in Tremé, New Orleans, in the neighborhood of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. His destiny became a reincarnation of his African ancestors who on Sundays were allowed a reprieve from the horrors of slavery to gather in Congo Square to play hand-beaten drums, to dance in the groove, to sing in call-and-response melodies, to siphon-off suffering with syncopated rhythms of sacred songs.
