Super Sunday

March 1, 2011 by: Syndey Byrd 14 Comments

Photographer: Syndey Byrd

I know how to disappear, that’s the key. You step over a line. I learned that from my mentor, Ernst Haas. I think this photograph of Big Chief Norman Bell of the Wild Tchoupitoulas Mardi Gras Indians is one of my best ones. I was out to document Super Sunday in 1980, and I didn’t know Norman at the time. A lot of people like this photograph. I love the composition and the setting that it’s in; the element of surprise. All great photography has an element of surprise. In this work, there are actually three persons. Tell me where the third one is.
