As the City of New Orleans deepens its partnership with the Essence Festival of Culture, Mayor Helena Moreno has announced the formation of a new Essence Festival Steering Committee aimed at strengthening coordination and planning for the 2026 event.
Now entering its fourth decade in New Orleans, Essence Festival of Culture remains one of the city’s most prominent cultural gatherings. The newly formed committee is tasked with ensuring continued success and growth, mirroring similar public-private collaborations established for large-scale events such as last year’s Super Bowl.
“Essence Fest is an iconic event, and I look forward to help make it the best it’s ever been,” Moreno said in a statement. “Bringing together city, civic and Essence leaders will provide enhanced coordination and collaboration to achieve necessary goals and benchmarks.”
The steering committee brings together key figures from city government, tourism, and national leadership, including Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff Kevin Ferguson; City Attorney Charline Gibson; Deputy Mayor of External Affairs Renee Lapeyrolerie; Walt Leger III, president and CEO of New Orleans & Company; Marc H. Morial; Cedric Richmond; and Doug Thornton, alongside Essence Festival leadership.
The Essence Festival of Culture will return July 3–5, 2026, with major events anchored at the Caesars Superdome and additional programming taking place across the city.
The move also comes amid ongoing conversations in recent years around festival logistics, economic impact and the distribution of resources tied to major events in New Orleans. City leaders have increasingly emphasized coordination and accountability as key priorities when hosting large-scale festivals.
