New Orleans’ most anticipated unofficial holiday—the moment king cake becomes “legal”—will be celebrated in high style on January 5 at Southport Hall with Countdown to King Cake, a high-energy Carnival kickoff that blends music, dance, and community giving.
The event brings together 16 of Carnival’s dance teams, each taking the stage to compete for the title of Champion. Performances will be judged live, with one team earning a championship belt and 100 percent of the night’s door proceeds, which will be donated to the charity of their choice—turning Carnival competition into meaningful community impact.
Adding to the night’s excitement, Glen David Andrews will perform, bringing his signature New Orleans sound to the celebration. As the clock strikes midnight, attendees will gather for a king cake toast, marking the official start of king cake season and the beginning of Carnival—no bad luck included.
Beyond the performances, Countdown to King Cake offers a full festive experience. Guests can enter a raffle featuring beautifully decorated Carnival throws and other standout prizes, enjoy a photo booth, and even purchase votes to support their favorite dance teams. These audience votes give teams the chance to win a second championship belt and secure an additional donation for a charity they care about.
At its heart, the event is about celebrating New Orleans culture while giving back—using the joy of Carnival to uplift local causes and the dance teams that champion them.
