New Orleans’ own DOWN is probably one of the most legendary heavy metal supergroups in the world. Pantera vocalist and Grace King alum Phil Anselmo, Corrosion of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan, Eyehategod’s Jimmy Bower, Crowbar’s Kirk Windstein and Goatwhore/Saint Vitus’ Pat Bruders signed to Nuclear Blast Records last year and are rumored to have a new album on the way for 2026. Last week, just in time for Mardi Gras, the quintent released their cover of Dr. John’s “Right Place, Wrong Time” with a music video directed by local videographer/producer Mike Holderbeast.
“Right Place, Wrong Time” was the first single from Dr. John’s 1973 album, In the Right Place, and became the most popular single of his career. The song has been featured in various films and television shows, including Dazed And Confused and American Horror Story: Coven.
The video for the cover serves as a homage to Dr. John and his appearances on The Midnight Special TV series, a late-night musical variety show that aired from 1972 to 1981.
Elaborates vocalist Philip H. Anselmo, “Dr. John’s ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’ is probably one of the first songs I ever learned or knew of as a kid. We grew up in the French Quarter and Dr. John’s music was everywhere. Recording this song was something that I always wanted to do and I’m happy that I did it with DOWN. The video was an absolute blast to make. Even my mom is in it! Because of her, I know Dr. John’s music very well.”
DOWN first unleashed their gritty, New Orleans-born sound on the 1995 platinum-selling debut NOLA, setting the stage for a series of critically acclaimed releases: Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow (2002), Down III: Over the Under (2007), and Down IV – Part One (2012) and Part Two (2014). Over the years, their live performances became legendary, including runs with Metallica and Heaven & Hell, as well as appearances at major festivals like Download, Soundwave, and Ozzfest. Through it all, the band has consistently delivered raw, soulful heavy music that resonates with fans both on stage and in the studio.
