Heritage School of Music Holding Jan. Auditions

The Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s signature music education program, is accepting applications for auditions once again. Students ages 8-18, ranging from beginner to advanced, are invited to apply. No prior musical experience is required. Auditions for the spring session will take place Saturday, January 10, 2026, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N Rampart Street).

Since 1990, the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music, a free afterschool program, which serves nearly 300 students a week, from beginners aged 8 years old to advanced students aged 18 with in-depth music training, ensemble playing and music theory throughout the school year and summer school taught by some of the best musicians in New Orleans .

Over the years, the program has experienced significant growth, particularly with the 2014 opening of the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center in New Orleans’ historic Tremé neighborhood, marking the school’s first-ever permanent home. This fully renovated facility boasts seven state-of-the-art classrooms equipped for music instruction, a 200-seat auditorium, and a recording studio, fostering an environment conducive to expanding the program and accommodating more students.

Today, the program also offers classes in audio and studio recording and vocal classes.  Students are accepted into the program at the beginning of school semesters.  The school’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting a deep appreciation for music underscores its valuable contribution to the community.

The Heritage School of Music offers a free, jazz-focused curriculum with courses in vocal performance, improvisation, music theory, ensemble performance, and more.
