Two-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Irvin Mayfield is involved in a new all-ages music and dining venue in the French Quarter: Felix’s presents Mayfield’s 208 Bourbon St. is open inside Felix’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Founded by musician and former OffBeat cover star Irvin Mayfield and restaurateur Danny Conwill, the space combines live performance, storytelling and a menu shaped by some of the city’s most recognizable culture bearers, including Kermit Ruffins, Cyril Neville, Gerald French, Jason Marsalis and Glen David Andrews. Mayfield says the partnership will create a venue by musicians, for musicians.

The venue positions itself as a musician-founded hub aimed at bringing an all-ages audience to Bourbon Street, blending culinary programming with artist-driven experiences.

Irvin Mayfield was instrumental in creating the Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street. In the years before launching his new Bourbon Street venue, Irvin Mayfield had already taken a contrarian path through a music industry that faces many evolving challenges. OffBeat’s John Swenson wrote in 2015 about the artist’s approach. Instead of shrinking his work into digital singles, he doubled down on large, ambitious projects—most notably a seven-CD collector’s set bundled into a deluxe coffee-table book built around a week of performances at his Jazz Playhouse. At a time when most artists struggled with dwindling funding, Mayfield operated with the savvy of an executive, using public-private partnerships to bring his ideas to life and positioning jazz as a viable entertainment experience even as national polls ranked it among the least popular genres. That earlier project, anchored in the long-running “Love Sessions” charity performances, set the tone for the expansive, artist-driven concepts he’s now carrying forward into his new club.
