Grammy Award–winning local pianist, singer, and songwriter Jon Cleary is bringing the sound of the Crescent City to international airwaves with a new weekly show on Jazz FM, launching this February as part of the station’s refreshed evening schedule.
Broadcasting directly from his home in New Orleans, The Jon Cleary Show will explore the city’s deep musical heritage, weaving together classic and contemporary sounds with guest appearances and the occasional live performance from Cleary himself. The debut episode is timed to coincide with Mardi Gras Day, underscoring the show’s roots in the city’s most sacred musical season.
Cleary joins Jazz FM following the retirement of longtime broadcaster Helen Mayhew, who stepped down at the end of January after an extraordinary 36-year tenure dating back to the station’s 1990 launch. Her departure marks a new chapter for Jazz FM’s Discovery programming, now led by working musicians with deep ties to the music they present.
In addition to Cleary, the new lineup includes Jazz FM Award–winning vocalist Mica Millar, who will host Jazz Voices, and saxophonist Leo Green, returning with a show centered on big band, swing, and traditional jazz. Friday evenings will also see the return of Dinner Jazz, alongside a new Jazz Chill strand highlighting ambient, soulful and electronic-influenced jazz.
Nick Pitts, Content Director of Jazz FM and Magic Classical, called Cleary’s addition “a real coup,” in a release, noting, “It’s a privilege to bring performers who live and breathe the music directly to our listeners.”
The Jon Cleary Show will air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. (UK time)/ 3 p.m. local time beginning February 16, offering listeners a direct line from London to New Orleans—just in time for Carnival.
