Mary Gauthier Returns to New Orleans January 14

Grammy-nominated songwriter Mary Gauthier will perform in New Orleans on January 14 at Chickie Wah Wah. A Thibodeaux native, Gauthier has built a career as a songwriter and author whose work focuses on personal narrative, social issues and the role of music in storytelling.

Songs by Mary Gauthier have been featured by The New York Times, Rolling Stone Country, CBS This Morning, NPR, The Los Angeles Times and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Over the course of her career, she has released multiple albums that address themes including addiction, recovery, identity, and belonging. Her connection to New Orleans figures prominently in albums such as Mercy Now and The Foundling, which reference her early life, including her adoption from a New Orleans orphanage.

Her most recent album, Dark Enough To See The Stars, follows Rifles & Rosary Beads, a collaborative project co-written with U.S. military veterans. Rifles & Rosary Beads received a Grammy nomination and was named Album of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards. Gauthier is also the author of Saved by a Song, a book examining songwriting as a creative and therapeutic practice.

In 2024, Gauthier marked the 25th anniversary of Drag Queens in Limousines, originally released in 1999 and recently reissued by Kill Rock Stars. That same year, the Americana Music Association recognized her body of work with a tribute concert featuring artists including Lori McKenna and Rodney Crowell.

Though based in Nashville, Gauthier maintains ties to New Orleans and has continued to perform regularly in the city, including at Chickie Wah Wah. Her January 14 appearance adds to a schedule of tour dates supporting her recent releases and ongoing songwriting work.

Chickie Wah Wah is located at 2828 Canal Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. January 14 for the Mary Guathier show. To purchase tickets, click here.
