On Friday, June 13, PJ Morton kicked off a new chapter in his already wide-reaching music career with the launch of A PJ Morton Production, a creative series rooted in cross-genre collaborations and aimed at spotlighting a new wave of talent in hip-hop, R&B, and gospel.
The series made its debut with “Pardon Me,” a raw, Snoop Dogg-approved track from La Reezy, a 20-year-old rapper from New Orleans whose music blends soulful production with a message of uplift. Now Morton is following it up with “Amazing,” a new single from longtime collaborator and six-time GRAMMY nominee Darrel Walls. While the two have shared stages and sessions before, “Amazing” signals a deeper artistic exploration between them.
With more music on the way from La Reezy, Darrel Walls and an unannounced collaboration with Teedra Moses, Morton has been helming each project at Studio in the Country, the historic complex in rural Bogalusa, Louisiana, where everyone from Stevie Wonder to Beach House, Dr. John, Jimmy Buffett, Kansas, The Neville Brothers, The Meters, Trent Reznor, Willie Nelson and more have recorded classic records. Sitting on 26 acres of pine forests, fields and ponds, Studio in the Country first opened in 1973, and Morton is working to preserve the landmark location, while helping more and more artists to experience its magic.
Rolling Stone stated in a recent article: “PJ Morton is ‘re-presenting’ a legendary Louisiana studio for a new generation. He’s made it part of his mission to preserve and amplify landmarks in his home state, including the home of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden, New Orleans jazz staple the Dew Drop Inn, and, now, Studio in the Country…Morton’s work aligns with his mission to help be a connecting figure who preserves music history.”
PJ Morton said in a press release, “In a space like this you’re cut off from the world, all we are focused on is being together and working on this music. All you’re doing is resting your mind and creating. I often call it ‘Magic Kingdom’ because something happens in that isolation that you don’t get from being in a normal studio in the city…La Reezy was like, ‘I would’ve never wrote this if I was home. These words wouldn’t have come to my mind if I was home.'”
“I love history and I love the past, and that’s in every way. Sonically, what they stood for, all of these things are so important to me. But I’m a child of hip-hop as well. I’ve always had my foot in both. I think that is part of my mission in life, to keep that conversation and keep us connected because a lot of the time, the only thing that disconnects us is the communication and the understanding.”
In recent weeks, PJ Morton has also appeared at the BET Awards alongside La Reezy, performed on the record-setting season finale of American Idol, was stamped as one of EBONY’s “headliners” who are shaping the cultural conversation and has announced a series of headline tour dates throughout 2025.
