Soul Brass Band Takes Mardi Gras West

The heartbeat of New Orleans heads to the West Coast this January as Soul Brass Band launches its first-ever Northern California tour. The “Mardi Gras Rolls West” Tour runs January 22–30, 2026, bringing the band’s high-energy blend of brass, funk, hip-hop, and second-line soul to cities from Santa Cruz to Sacramento.

The tour kicks off on Thursday, January 22, at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, launching a week of performances designed to turn venues into living Mardi Gras processions—complete with vibrant horns, irresistible grooves, and the communal joy of New Orleans street parades.

Soul Brass Band is led by drummer, vocalist, and cultural torchbearer Derrick “Smoker” Freeman and features an all-star lineup of New Orleans musicians:

  • James Martin – Saxophonist and composer celebrated for fiery improvisation and soulful tone, with performances spanning Jazz Fest and international stages.

  • Miles Lyons – Grammy Award–winning trombonist and one of the most in-demand brass players of his generation, known for his work with the New Orleans Nightcrawlers and the California Honeydrops.

  • Sasha Brown – Los Angeles–based guitarist, songwriter, and producer (formerly of Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds), bringing modern soul textures and deep-pocket rhythm work.

  • Kyle Sharmitaro – New Orleans drummer and vocalist recognized for his groove-driven style and leadership of the Kyle Sharmitaro Band.

  • Mark Levron – New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist whose bold, modern brass sound is heard across roots, jazz, and soul projects.

  • Wes Anderson – Son of jazz legend Wes Anderson III, mentored by Delfeayo Marsalis at UNO, with credits including Allen Toussaint, Pretty Lights, and Crescent City Soul.

Together, the ensemble bridges classic brass band traditions with contemporary funk, hip-hop, and soul—capturing the sound and spirit of modern New Orleans.

“Mardi Gras is about community, joy, and music that moves you,” says Freeman. “We’re bringing that second-line energy to California—so y’all can dance, smile, and celebrate life with us.”

Known for electrifying performances at Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, and festivals worldwide, Soul Brass Band continues to expand the legacy of New Orleans brass culture for audiences across the globe.
