The Treme Brass Band will perform at Chickie Wah Wah (2828 Canal St.) on Friday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m., in a special event celebrating the legacy of Donna’s Bar & Grill, the former North Rampart Street club once known as the “Brass Band Headquarters.”
Led by Benny Jones, often called the “granddaddy” of today’s younger brass bands, the group will pair live music with stories about Donna’s and its role in shaping New Orleans brass band culture. The evening coincides with the release of Donna’s Bar & Grill – New Orleans, a new book by club owner Dr. Donna Poniatowski Sims. Drawing on photographs, taped interviews, and first-person narratives, the book documents how Donna’s nurtured brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians in the 1990s and early 2000s, helping bring the traditions into mainstream club venues.
Donna’s, which operated from 1993 to 2010 at 800 N. Rampart St., was co-owned by Sims and her husband, chef Charlie Sims, and became a launching pad for musicians who later found national and international acclaim.
In keeping with tradition, red beans and rice will be served during intermission.
