The Trombone Shorty Foundation has opened registration for the 2025/26 school year at its esteemed Trombone Shorty Academy. The Shorty Academy offers a free after-school program for New Orleans youth ages 12-18 providing students with the opportunity to not only learn how to play in a musical ensemble, but also grow their appreciation for New Orleans’s music and history.
The program hosts a music industry apprenticeship program; a free program on the music business (Fredman Music Business Institute); and masterclasses and cultural experiences including trips to Cuba. The young students not only perform at Shorty Fest, but use the skills learned through the foundation’s business-oriented programs to help produce the event, which features marching bands, alumni bands and a battle of the bands contest.
Enrollment is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. New students must be at least 12 years old and no older than 18 years old. One year of prior musical experience on your respective instrument is required. Students must provide their own instruments. All students must audition on Monday, Aug. 25.
The application is here. This registration form should take no more than 5 – 10 minutes to fill in. If you have any questions or need assistance with filling out the form, contact Ashley Shabankareh at [email protected].
