Unreleased Dr. John Recording Arrives November 21

Omnivore Recordings and the Official Estate of Dr. John have announced Live at the Village Gate, a previously unreleased concert recording from the late New Orleans icon. The album will be available in digital format and as a double CD on November 21, one day after Dr. John’s birthday.

Recorded on the evening of March 5, 1988, at New York City’s Village Gate, the performance captures Mac Rebennack, better known as Dr. John, in peak form. The set features Dr. John classics such as “Mess Around,” “Georgia On My Mind,” and “Mardi Gras Day,” along with a fan-requested rendition of “Mama Roux” from his landmark 1968 debut, Gris Gris.

Live at the Village Gate has been restored and mastered by multiple Grammy Award–winning engineer Michael Graves and includes new liner notes by Joe Marchese of The Second Disc. The release offers more than 90 minutes of vintage Dr. John — a document of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s signature mix of funk, blues, and New Orleans soul.

Known for timeless hits like “Right Place, Wrong Time” and “Such a Night,” Dr. John’s influence stretched across five decades until his passing in 2019. This newly unearthed recording adds another chapter to his remarkable legacy.

Pre-order the album through Omnivore Recordings.
