Buddy Flett, Mississippi Sea (Out of the Past)

A founding member of A Train (probably the best Louisiana rock band that should have, but didn’t make it big) and the Bluebirds, Shreveport guitarist Buddy Flett has released his first solo acoustic blues CD and it’s really quite impressive. Flett’s singing and playing here is Delta (as in Mississippi) influenced, in the tradition of Bukka White and Son House. His song writing is also strikingly original. Case in point is the attractive opener “Baby’s Back in Town.” An eight-bar blues, it’s a tale about the tail end of a romance. Another topic people around here can identify with is addressed in “Run for the Levees,” a song that obviously addresses the hurricane and its effects. Flett does draw on traditional sources and his slide work on Elmore James’ “Done Somebody Wrong” underlines his considerable guitar skills. Likewise, Flett’s interpretation of Leadbelly’s “Linin’ Track” is one of the most powerful songs on the disc. A worthy and appealing CD that should draw some well deserved attention to Flett.
