Fernest Arceneaux, Old School Zydeco (Mardi Gras Records)

Nothing terribly serious here, just some rough and ready zydeco played the way it used to be played.

Hardly a new comer, Fernest was making great push and pull 45s for J. D. Miller in Crowley 25 years ago. In fact he was responsible for “Zydeco Boogaloo,” now a song practically in public domain in Acadiana. Arceneaux plays the small button accordion but he can really rock with it.

Most of the material is recycled standards—“Big Mamou,” “Hippy Ti Yo,” “Joe Pete Has Two Women”—but there’s a couple of ringers including great versions of B. B. King’s “Whole Lot Of Love” and Lowell Fulsom’s “Reconsider Me.”

Arceneaux attempts “When The Saints Go Marching” (Hey, this is a Mardi Gras Records CD) but Dixieland and zydeco mix like oil and water here. Guitarist Paul Senegal kicks up a lot of dust and bassist Alonzo Johnson provides a great bottom.

Not a must, but superior to a lot of other recent zydeco releases.
