Gregg Martinez, Big Bad Daddy (Seaul)

Gregg Martinez flirted with a career as a rock ’n’ roll singer in the 1980s, but he ended up with the addictions and unpleasant down sides without the gold records to match. He turned to Christianity to help him clean up and has since dedicated his musical career to spreading the Word. On the new Big Bad Daddy, he straddles the line, with few songs expressing an overtly Christian message. Instead, in big, Blood, Sweat & Tears-like arrangements, his songs reflect a worldview influenced by religion, with the only direct testifying coming in the last few songs. Martinez has a big voice, but the songs are a little generic in their nostalgic looks back and expressions of troubled relationships. Fortunately, the arrangements are a little more idiosyncratic, with a hint of swamp pop to keep the project from sounding too Branson, Missouri.
