James Harman, Two Sides to Every Story (Hep Cat)

This CD is part of the first batch of Black Top reissues appearing on Hep Cat. While Icepick James made several excellent CDs during his Black Top tenure, Two Sides to Every Story was a big favorite. Recorded in 1991, it marks Harman as a blues laureate; his world view leads to some hilarious, telling and damn entertaining material. Case in point is the opener, “My Little Girl,” where Harman gets fed crow on a silver platter and gets his lunch wrapped in a road map. The title track also is telling, with some great interplay between Harman’s bright harp and Jeff “Big Dad” Turmes’s growling guitar. Harman can be found here in a variety of settings—backed by just piano, with a small combo and a big band. “If the Shoe Fits (Wear It)” has a big, chunky horn sound very much in the swinging West Coast R&B tradition. From beginning to end, this one is superlative—even the cover is great. Glad to see this one back on the shelves.
