Kipori “Baby Wolf” Woods, Blues Man from Down South (Independent)

Kipori Woods, album coverKipori Woods grew up in New Orleans under the tutelage of his grandfather, the late “Luscious” ‘Lloyd Lambert-a bass guitarist who played with the likes of Ray Charles, Little Richard, Doc Cheatham, Guitar Slim, and Danny Barker.

Kipori’s pseudonym, “Baby Wolf,” was adopted as a tribute to the influence of Walter “Wolfman” Washington.

CD, “Baby Wolf” displays his wares as a songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. In the N’Awlins tradition, this disc is a mixed bag of treats ranging from an electrified blues style in “Bye Bye Baby” to a swamp boogie style in “Smokin’ that Fire.”

Accompanied by Davell Crawford‘s excellent keyboards, bass by Viras Paukspaipis, and “Junkyard Dog” Arnold on drums, this is one smokin’ number. A jazzy version of “The Thrill is Gone” and a couple of R&B runes round out the mix.
