Larry “Love” Hamilton, The Soulman (LJH)

It looks like New Orleans soul brother Larry Hamilton sho’ nuff found himself some love. Primarily known as writer, Hamilton’s been on the scene since the late 1960s. You might recall he waxed an Allen Toussaint-produced, self-titled CD for NYNO in the late 1990s that got some good ink. Hamilton possesses a smoky voice that draws comparison to Z.Z. Hill. Hamilton wrote most of the material here, and he’s developed a blue pen that’s on display here. “Open the Door” and “Keep The News To Yourself” are both fine Malaco-style blues that really do sound like tracks off a Z. Z. Hill album. “Hard Headed” is another good blues, while “La Le Da” is a convincing invitation to the dance floor. Unfortunately, this one suffers from Hamilton’s selection of covers. Do we need another cover of “Mustang Sally,” Midnight Hour” or “Respect”? Still, Hamilton’s originals are worth checking out. It’s good to know someone is still writing and recording this kind of music.
