Lenny McDaniel, Bad for Me (Renegade Records)

When New Orleans expatriate Lenny McDaniel came home after 13 years of self-imposed exile in Los Angeles, he didn’t return empty-handed. He brought along material that became his debut as a bandleader, Bad for Me, a well-crafted collection of meat-and-potatoes R&B. This is a solo effort in the truest sense—McDaniel handed vocal, guitar, bass, harmonica and piano chores, in addition to writing all the material and producing the record. But the effort is even-handed throughout, full of snappy guitar breaks and seductive hooks. The title track chugs along with Dr. John-esque barrelhouse piano and morning-after vocals (“everything I love is bad for me”). It’s pull-your-partner-close time with “When You Were Mine,” then “Movin’ On” second-lines through a litany of no-regrets. “So Affectionately” boasts an utterly irresistible chorus, one of many throughout the record. “Everything I love is bad for me”? Not this disc.
