Paulette Wright-Davis, Psalmstress (Rampart Street Music)

Paulette Wright-Davis is kin to one of New Orleans’ greatest female vocalists, Marva Wright, and the influence definitely shows. Paulette Wright-Davis’ style is very much like that of Marva’s. An accomplished songstress herself, Wright-Davis glides smoothly up and down the vocal scale, changing octaves as effortlessly as one would change tracks on a CD player. Gospel aficionados will find nothing to be disappointed about here. Traditional, highly energized Mahalia-style motifs are just about evenly interspersed with slower, smoother, more modern forms of contemporary gospel. Most of nine tracks on this CD feature choir-style backing vocals, and a few big name musicians pitch in on this effort. These include Davell Crawford on keyboards and Marva herself on one of two versions of “Walk Around Heaven” on the record (the second version features Rev. Ray Inglehart on lead vocals). Wright-Davis and Marva perform a duet on the first version and, as might be expected, this is one of the best cuts on the CD. Wright-Davis also sings a worthy tribute to Mahalia; a medley of spirituals that include “Move On Up a Little Higher” and “How I Got Over,” two of the immortal gospel diva’s most memorable songs.
