The Interlopers, “You Make it Sound So Bad…” (Rhinestone)

If punk rock is defined by its velocity, then the Interlopers “You Make it Sound So Bad…” isn’t punk rock. If it has more to do with disregarding conventional wisdom and making your own musical way, then the Interlopers define punk rock. This six-song EP is released on 10-inch vinyl — the only format less practical than wax cylinders — which seems like a perfectly punk gesture. Each vinyl disc is packaged with a CD for those who lack turntables, but people who have heard both tell me the vinyl sounds better.

Like early Pere Ubu, the Interlopers’ choose an aggressively noisy musical road that is, at its core, private. The record collections of the band aren’t obvious from listening to “You Make it Sound So Bad…” which makes it all the more intriguing. Still, even early Pere Ubu found something that would serve as a hook, and a few hooks would help here. As is, you have to get into the internal logic of the tracks to really connect to this EP.
