U-Ka, Live at Snug Harbor (Independent)

Is warm enough? Just how far will a soulful earnestness get you? U-Ka’s Live at Snug Harbor boasts an excellent band that includes Charles Neville on saxophones, James Singleton on bass, Herb Taylor on drums, Larry Sieberth on keyboards, Jim Lassen on bassoon, Kristen Gautenby on clarinet and Gregory Boyd on steel drums, but the band is dominated by vocalist Naomi Louise Warne. It’s tempting to imagine Oprah listening to these urbane tracks, but Oprah’s choice in books says she’d want more detail, too. With gently ascending melodies, the songs sound like someone overcoming struggle, but nothing in Warne’s lyrics stick—only the tone of her voice. That’s unquestionably beautiful and everything is played with perfect taste. The question is, is that enough?
