Various Artists, Dream Palace: Live Volume II (Frenchmen St. Records)

For such a small club, the degree of diversity on display nightly at the now-deceased Dream Palace was astounding. This second volume of live material from the storied club garners 12 tracks of varying genres (and quality) to draw an atmospheric portrait of an unassuming little venue on Frenchmen Street.

Dream Palace: Live, vol. 2, album coverThe collection begins with an up-tempo zydeco tune from the youngest of the Dopsie clan, Dwayne Dopsie, and includes Kipori Woods on guitar. But the album comes to a dead halt with a slow-cooking meandering blues from Little Freddie King and a surprisingly flat Juice tune entitled “Geranium.” Luckily, Casa Samba saves the day with an impromptu Latin percussion jam session.

Hector Gallardo’s Impulso burns brightly with Cuban timbales and tres rhythms, and the Revealers add their brand of Caribbean-light styling bolstering the dancability of the collection. Moving into acoustic blues territory, the Back Porch Rockers take off with an exceptional harmonica turn from Tony Glover in “Sunday’s Girl (Just a Fool).”

The best track might be from the electric blues of Mike Darby. His guitar solos on “I Can’t Wait Forever” are the kinds of sounds that only emerge in smokey late-night jam sessions that made the Dream Palace the great venue that it was.

While uneven, Dream Palace Volume II does make you wish the club had managed to stay afloat and continue to provide a place for musicians of all styles to converge.
