Various Artists, New Orleans Will Rise Again (Night Train)

New Orleans Will Rise Again is an eclectic 22-track mix of various styles from the catalog/tape vaults of New York’s Night Train label with proceeds to be donated to the displaced New Orleans Musicians Clinic. While there is some material here that might be used to plug the levee breaches, let’s dwell on the positive—something that gets harder to do here with each passing day. Personally, the highlight here is the previously un-reissued Shagg rarity, “I Am Never Going To Break His Rules Again” by Guitar Ray—Earl King’s cousin who’s been a ward of the State’s Jackson mental hospital for several decades. Alex Spearman—who sounds like Tommy Ridgley here—contributes the delightful “Mama Ka Toka Laka Poo Poo Ya,” Aaron Neville’s “Forever More” is a strong ballad, K-Doe’s “My Mother In Law (Is In My Hair Again)” is amusing and Joe Barry’s “Every Breath You Take,” is a superior slab of swamp pop. There are several songs here that directly relate to our plight including the funky “The Monkey That Became President” by Brotherhood, James Black’s “There’s a Storm In the Gulf,” and Bobby Jay’s “Searching For the High Road.” There are plenty of great sounds amidst the chaff here and the proceeds go to a worthy New Orleans cause. I might also add—without spoiling the surprise—this collection has one of the most bizarre conclusions you’ll ever hear.
