Various Artists, Pure Swamp Pop Gold Vol. 1 (CSP Records)

Swamp pop might well be referred to as South Louisiana’s “other music” as it generally takes a back seat to Cajun and zydeco music. Nevertheless, Swamp pop remains extremely popular with middle-age listeners from Beaumont to Westwego, who still enjoy an occasional evening on the dance floor and a couple of 7 & 7’s.

This Swamp pop package assembles 19 recent tracks by Van and Grace Broussard, Wayne Foret, Crosscut, Bits and Pieces, and Mike Broussard. Most of the CD consists of agreeable covers including “Kidnapper,” “Feed the Flame,” “Got You On My Mind” and “I Got Loaded,” songs that are practically Swamp pop anthems. The pride of Prarieville, Van Broussard, gets the lion’s share of the work here (seven tracks) and he shines throughout, particularly on the emotive “Feed The Flame.”

The hardest working man in Bridge City and a guy with a lot of soul, Wayne Foret, contributes four tracks, the best perhaps being “No More Loneliness.” An enjoyable collection that proves Swamp pop is alive and well on the bayou.
