Various Artists, Still Standin’: 25 Years of New Orleans Roots Music (Rabadash)

John Autin has quietly been putting out CDs on Rabadash Records for 25 years now, and he celebrates the anniversary with Still Standing, a compilation of highlights from their releases. Little here is essential, but Rabadash has released a number of CDs that definitely worth revisiting because they present artists in their developmental stages. The album opens with a hot solo track from John Magnie of the subdudes and Theresa Andersson in jazz chanteuse mode on “Missing You.” Interestingly, one her new EP she works to get the kind of sonic space to sing in that she had on this spare track, backed with a sousaphone, clarinet and tambourine.

As on any compilation, some tracks are stronger than others. Doug Duffey’s “Disarmed” is dated by its hair-metal guitar sound, and Tex Townes’ spoken word-with-backing “Mountain Stream” lays bare the old hippy that’s never really very far from a lot of the music in New Orleans. Then again, there are also a number of memorable tracks here, particularly “Louisiana Moon,” a lullaby by Big Daddy ‘O,’ and “Louisiana Rain” by the Osborne Orchestra. The latter features Anders Osborne playing southern rock boogie with his slide guitar lighting up the tracks. Rabadash gave these artists and others a chance to find their artistic voices — including Autin, whose “I Miss Our Darlin’ New Orleans” is from his ambitious From the Lone Star to the Gulf Coast — which these days is more important than ever.
