Vin Bruce, Cajun Legend (Mardi Gras)

Originally released on Lanor, to the best of my knowledge (there are no notes on this one), these tracks date from the 1970s. Vin Bruce—who doubles as Bayou Lafouche’s port commissioner—might best be referred to as the Don Gibson of Cajun music. He sings in a flat but not unattractive style in both French and English. Sporting fiddles, a pounding drums and steel guitars, he tends to be more country than Cajun. The accordion, though, ties him to the Bayou State. Songs like “Where Is Love?,” “Si Jaurais Des Ailes,” and “Les Cadjins Du Bayou,” lean towards Nashville. “He’ Jolie,” and “Palmetto Waltz,” though, are firmly planted in Cut Off, Louisiana. (Being from the land of hockey, Molson and Maple Leafs, I have a rudimentary knowledge of French and know some of these song titles are misspelled.) Listening to 20 Vin Bruce tracks in a row can be a bit of a challenge, as he really has only one speed. But hey, the guy’s in the Country Music and Cajun Music halls of fame. If that’s not the seal of approval, I don’t know what is.
